No Tuition Increase, More Faculty Approved In LCC Budget

Lower Columbia College trustees have approved a $23.46 million budget for the 2013-14 school year, which reflects a modest 5.6 percent increase in funding over the previous year and no increase in tuition rates for students.

LCC will receive just over $11 million in state appropriations for its 2013-14 operating budget, which restores about $298,000 cut the previous year as part of a three percent reduction in funding for state employees. Remaining funds come from student tuition, local funds, reserves, and dollars carried forward from last year. The College will also receive an additional $2.4 million to cover debt service payments for the coming year on revenue bonds sold to finance the Health and Science building.

Expenditures for the coming year are up a modest one percent as the College seeks to restore some of the personnel and services deferred or cut over the past three years. That includes filling eight full-time tenure-track faculty positions.

“We are extremely pleased to see an end to reductions in state aid, especially coupled with no tuition increases for our students,” said LCC President Chris Bailey.

“Restoring full-time faculty positions left vacant during the recession will enable us to maintain the high standard of instruction that prepares our students for the workforce or to transfer to baccalaureate institutions.”

The College budget projects an enrollment of about 2,900 FTE for 2013-14, down about two percent from last year and 13 percent above its state-funded target.
