Fighting Smelt Forensics Team Takes top Honors, December 13, 2013

The Lower Columbia College Forensics Team placed second in the community college division at Oregon State University on February 22 and 23, 2014.

The Fighting Smelt ranked fourth out of 13 two-year and four-year colleges and universities from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, competing at the tournament. They were bolstered by outstanding performances in individual speaking events and debate.

Marty Kay, a freshman from Kelso, placed first in Open Division After Dinner Speaking. Rosse Rodriguez, a sophomore from Longview, placed first in Novice Division Informative Speaking. Erin Mastoras, a sophomore from Medford, OR placed second in Novice Division Persuasive Speaking. Tyler Stewart, a freshman from Longview, WA finished third in Novice Division Extemporaneous Speaking.

In debate, Rodriguez was the gold medalist in Novice Division International Public Debate after finishing the preliminary rounds with a 3 win and 2 loss record. She defeated a debater from College of Southern Idaho in the bronze round and a debater from Lane Community College in the gold round. Bonnie Ellis, a freshman from Cathlamet, was a bronze medalist in Novice Division Public Debate. She finished with a 3 win and 2 loss record in the preliminary rounds but lost to a debater from Whitworth University in the bronze round.
