When to Apply for Financial Aid

As soon as possible!

While you are able to apply for financial aid at any time during the year, we recommend applying as early as January 1.

Apply using the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA determines which aid programs and the amount of aid for which you are eligible.

You must apply with the FAFSA even if you are only applying for student loans. For information about loans please see the Financial Aid Forms Library and select 'Stafford Loan Information' for the correct academic year.

Your financial aid is not automatically renewed. You must apply one time each academic year with the FAFSA. You do not need to reapply during an academic year, even if you stopped attending one or more quarters.

You are also strongly encouraged to apply for Lower Columbia College Scholarships.

Is there a deadline to apply for financial aid?

Yes. You should complete your entire financial aid file by the Priority Deadlines listed in  Financial Aid Deadlines. Doing so gives you the best chance to receive all the financial aid you are eligible for by the first week of classes. It also allows for adequate processing time, and reduces the risk that grant funding will be depleted.

How to Apply for Financial Aid

Step 1: Apply for the FAFSA 

  • Get help beforehand by watching the tutorial: 7 Easy Steps to the FAFSA.
  • Obtain a PIN number at pin.ed.gov, which you'll use to complete the application. Tip: parents of dependent students must also obtain their own PIN to use as their signature on the FAFSA.
  • Use LCC School Code 003782.
  • Gather important information: social security number, income statements, tax or estimated income tax, bank statements, etc.
  • Follow all steps to complete the FAFSA.

Your FAFSA will be electronically sent to the school 5-7 business days after you complete the form.

Step 2: Check the status of your financial aid application in the Financial Aid Portal

The Financial Aid office disburses federal and state grants, work-study, student loans, scholarships, and various funds from other programs. If you have been awarded or are expecting to be awarded one of these forms of aid, you need to use the portal as the primary communication tool regarding your financial aid status.

  • See a list of documents you need to submit or have already submitted.
  • Scan and upload required documents (if you are unable to do so, submit them to the Financial Aid Office).
  • Read messages from financial aid staff that affect your financial aid status.
  • Review your financial aid award.


If the portal tells you to submit documents for verification, you may be able to avoid requesting your IRS tax transcript by logging back into your FAFSA and following instructions to import your tax data from the IRS.


Your application for financial aid, in addition to registering for classes, implies acceptance of your financial aid award and certifies that you have read, understand, and agree to the award, the Conditions of Your Financial Aid Award, and Satisfactory Academic Progress.

You also allow the LCC cashier to pay your quarterly tuition and fees, and up to $200.00 for any unpaid charges you owe LCC from a prior academic year with your award.

You are responsible for paying any tuition and fees that are not covered by your award.

Step 3: Apply for admission to Lower Columbia College

Applying for admission is your first step as a new student. If you plan to register for classes leading to a degree or certificate, you must apply for admission.

Step 4: Receive your money

Your initial financial aid award is based on full-time enrollment. The amount of funds disbursed to you will be adjusted based on the actual number of credits you take (i.e. enrolled credits).

What are my responsibilities as a student?

  • Read and understand the Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards and the Conditions of Your Award, available in the Financial Aid Forms Library.
  • Log into the Financial Aid Portal on a regular basis to check for award updates and important messages from financial aid.
  • Read and understand your award. Remember loans must be paid back when you stop attending and regardless of whether you graduate.
  • Keep the Registration Office informed of your current address, phone number and email.
