ANGEL for Faculty

What is ANGEL?
ANGEL stands for A New Global Environment for Learning. It is Lower Columbia College's online course management system. Users go to a web address, put in their username and password and then enter course space and online groups. ANGEL is used for online  learning and face-to-face instruction. Instructors use ANGEL to share course materials, facilitate communication, and provide assessment. Currently, about 2,450 LCC faculty, staff, and students use ANGEL in a given quarter.

Who can use ANGEL?
Anyone affiliated with LCC may use ANGEL. Some instructors use ANGEL for their individual courses. Some programs run all their courses on ANGEL. Various groups, not connected with teaching and learning specifically use the system to share access to intellectual property, communicate, etc.

How do students get their login info?
Students can attend one of several generic orientations and receive their usernames and passwords. If an instructor requests an ANGEL course environment, we send a one-page information sheet to that instructor for every student enrolled in the course. Students can go to the computer lab (with photo ID) to get their login information. We can also send student login information to the student’s LCC email address or the email address they supplied when registering for classes.

What should students do if they need technical assistance?
In the event an instructor is not able to help a student with a particular issue, students can contact the eLearning Office for assistance. This is not a 24/7 support line, but is checked by multiple people and students are more likely to reach someone on the phone and will often get a faster response than they will if they contact a specific person.

How do instructors get started?
Contact the eLearning Office to schedule an orientation and get connected with further help and training.

If you are an instructor who would like to have an ANGEL course environment created for your class or for a series of courses, contact the eLearning Office. Please include the following information:

  • Primary instructor
  • Title of course in ANGEL
  • Other instructors or staff who should be added to the ANGEL course
  • Which schedule line item numbers or sections should be added to the course (four digit numbers available in the printed schedule or via the college website)
  • Will course be entirely online or hybrid (you have some activities and course requirements face-to-face and some online)
  • Please copy  in the Office of Instruction with any e-mail communication. She needs the information to setup the course correctly in the schedule.

Where can students go for orientation?
During the first week of each quarter there are several generic new student orientations (listed in the printed schedule). If Kristy Enser knows you will be using ANGEL with your course, an icon will be placed next to your course in the printed schedule letting students know they need to attend an orientation. All students and instructors are welcome at these generic orientations but due to time constraints, please do not come to the generic orientations expecting to share course specific information with your students.

What should instructors do if they need technical assistance?
Instructors should follow the same guidelines as students in seeking assistance unless a specific person in the eLearning office has already been helping them on an ongoing issue.

What training/assistance is available for staff and faculty?
We try to provide the training opportunities that faculty and/or staff need. We offer one-on-one orientations, small group workshops, go at-your-own pace online instruction, and periodic fully developed for-credit courses. We also provide instructional design; support for subject matter experts who want to format what they know for the online learner.
