	Vern Johnson When Vern Johnson earned his associates degree in Data Processing at LCC in 1984, mainframe computers, not PCs, were current technology. He worked more than 20 years in computer-related positions before being laid off during tough economic times. Johnson realized that significant changes in his field would require updating his computer skills to land a job today. He decided to leverage his past experience and take advantage of funding available through the Trade Act to complete Computer Science studies in programming, networking and web development. Retraining adult students have an advantage over recent high school graduates, Vern feels, because good study habits evolve more easily from a lifetime of work habits. One difference, with four children at home, it is less distracting to complete most of his homework on campus. After learning to use LCC’s ANGEL system for online studies, assignments and hybrid courses, he prefers the flexibility that option offers over traditional classes. Holleigh Yaden Holleigh Yaden has a “potluck of different careers under her belt,” but always wanted to earn her college degree. After being laid off during the economic recession, she took advantage of Trade Act funds to realize that longtime dream. A strong commitment to her studies has landed Yaden on the honor role every quarter for the past year and helped her earn scholarships to cover costs. Her mother, an LCC nursing graduate, proudly posts the certificates on the refrigerator. “And she took me shopping for school clothes for the first time in 30 years!” chuckles Holleigh. Yaden is building on years of work experience in office settings to complete LCC’s program for Medical Administrative Assistants. Then, she plans to continue studies to earn a bachelors degree and build a career in healthcare that will enable her to take care of her family. Robert Cummings Robert Cummings was laid off in early 2006 from Sinnett's MarketPlace, where he was a journeyman retail clerk, warehouse manager and receiving clerk. That Spring, he started at LCC, with help from the Worker Retraining Program. He was LCC's top Accounting Student for 2006-07, and graduated Winter of 2008. He's working for Opsahl, Shepp & Company, getting work experience and looking forward to moving up. "If it weren't for the grants and the Worker Retraining, I wouldn't have been able to go through school," he said.

Out of work? Facing a layoff? You may be eligible for Worker Retraining or Financial Assistance to train for a new career. Many training programs are available. Eligibility involves a variety of factors. Qualifications include: Drawing unemployment benefits Facing lay-off, or unemployed and have exhausted your benefits Self-employed (but have become unemployed because of natural disaster or general economic conditions in your community) Overview of Worker Retraining - see Program Cards The Career Center can evaluate your skills, help you choose a training program and refine your job search strategy. You may qualify for federal or state financial aid, scholarships or Opportunity Grants. Funding varies by eligibility, but can include tuition, books, living expenses, childcare, transportation and support services.
