Who are we?
You may have seen us out in the quad (or on the Student Center stage when the weather is poor) practicing. Our members learn to fence if they have never fenced before, work on improving their fencing skills, and we go to fencing competitions in the Northwest.
Competition
LCC's Fencing Club competed in its first tournament Feb. 24 at Reed College in Portland. Our saber team--Andrew Greig, Doug Carter, and Jacob Rintou--took first place, competing against teams from Reed and the University of Oregon.
"Not many teams, but it's always fun to do well when you're competing against 4-year schools," said LCC coach and advisor Rick Swee.
Our foil team--Zach Greig, David Meyers, and Corwyn Kiger--took second place. There 10 foil teams in all, including three from Reed, two from UO, two from Clark, plus LCC and a private club. Because there were so few saber fencers, our saber team fenced in the foil event as well. They had fun and fenced well, but didn't "place" until the last competition of the 2006-2007 school year, winning both first and second place.
Fencing Rules and Regulations:
The 2005 Rule Book for fencing is a great place to learn the rules (complete with the Penalty Chart). The USFA Referee Handbook is another source for anyone interested in participating in the fencing club.
